YANGON

 

Yangon is the capital of Myanmar and major seaport as well. Yangon has earned the name of "The Garden City of East". Being rebuilt as a modern capital, Yangon is attractive in m any ways for tourists. Yangon was founded by King Alaungpaya, founder of the Third Myanmar Empire, when he conquered Lower Myanmar in 1755. The name Yangon literally means "End of Strife" which was anglicized to Rangoon after British annexed Myanmar in 1885. The present day Yangon covers an area of 400sq.km with a population of nearly six million.

WHAT TO SEE IN YANGON

 

The main attraction of sightseeing in Yangon is the Shwedagon pagoda. A visit to Yangon is incomplete without if he or she misses to visit. According to a legend this massive bell-shaped some 328 feet(100 meter) light stupa was believe to have built over 2,500 years ago where the Buddha's relic were enshrined. The pagoda platform occupies an area of 14 acres (5.6 hectares), covered with religious buildings of all shapes and sizes. The pagoda is studed with thick gold plates from the upper basement to the top and decorated with more than 5000 diamonds and colorful precious gems on top the Bud. There always are many Myanmar people praying and making offerings at Shwedagon Pagoda. For foreigners, it is an amazing architectural work of Myanmar people. Surrounding smaller stupas and images as well as stairways, approaching the pagoda from four cardinal directions, feature works of traditional Myanmar art. The best time to visit the Shwedagon are early morning or evening.


                                                                   Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda


It is a 230 feet ( 72 meter ) Reclining Buddha, remarkable for its size. Which was rebuilt in 1960.The original image, built in 1907 was damaged due to exposure to climate over the years.


                                                                   National Museum


It is located on Pyay Road near downtown Yangon, The lager- than-life-size images of King Anawrahta, the founder of the First Myanmar ( Bagan Era), and King Bayintnaung, the founder of the second Myanmar, stands in front of the five-storied elegant building. The most remarkable single piece of exhibits in the museum is the magnificent Thihathana Throne (Lion Throne), a vast gilded wooden structure inlaid with lacquer-work. King Thibaw, the last Myanmar monarch, sat on this throne when it was housed in the Royal Palace in Mandalay. Because of the decorative lion figures at corners, it was named the Lion Throne. It measures 34 feet and 6 inches from base to top and nearly 6 feet from base to sitting place.


                                                                    Bogyoke Aung San Market


It is situated in the heart of Yangon. It was named Scott Market after Mr. C. Scott, the then Municipal Commissioner. Now, the name was changed to Bogyoke Aung San market in honour of our national Leader General Aung San. It is the most popular market of Yangon and of Myanmar as well. A wide range of Myanmar souvenirs are available at this market attracting every foreign- visitors to come and buy their own choice. There are some 2000 shops selling luxury items, handicrafts, food stuffs, clothing, jeweler, fashion and consumer goods.


                                                                   War Cemetery


It is situated at Htaukkyant and a memorial cemetery of Allied soldiers fallen in the Myanmar campaign during the World War (II). Some 27,000 stone graves of Common Wealth and Allied soldiers are kept there. The cemetery is a calm, peaceful place and is beautiful tended.


Hlawga Wildlife Park


It is situated 23 miles away from Yangon. The park, covering 1540 acres of land and a lake, is a home to over 70 kinds of herbivorous animals and 90 species of birds. Flocks of migratory birds frequently visit the park. The park is an ideal place for picnickers, naturalists, botanists and bird-watchers. Visitors can enjoy elephant rides, boating and fishing in the lake.


WHAT TO SEE AROUND YANGON

                                                                   Thanlyin (Syriam)


This small town can be easily reached after a 30-minute drive from downtown Yangon crossing the Thanlyin Bridge built by Chinese and Myanmar engineers , There you will see the Kyaik-Khauk pagoda, situated on a hillock not far from the town. If you continue 7.5 mile (12km) further, you will reach the Yele Le Pagoda or Mid-water Pagoda, at the end of the road. It situated on tiny island in the middle of a wide river. You can visit the islet shrine by a sampan (launch ferry) from the riverbank. It is guarded by two colorful orgies. Feeding the harmless fish is a favourite past-time for visitors.


                                                                   Twantay


It is located on the other side of Yangon River, only 24km away from Yangon. Twantay is well known for pottery works. A large part of the population in Twantay is engaged in producing pottery. Walking through the many workshops where locals are busy molding pots, you will be able to observe this very traditional craft.                                                                                                         top
