                                                      BAGO (PEGU)


Bago (pegu), the ancient capital, is situated in northeast, 50 miles away from Yangon. This ancient city, once ruled by Mon Kings, is known as Oktha Pegu. Earlier Europeans visitors frequently mentioned the city as an important sea-port. The city was under Bagan Empire during the region of Bagan Kings, started from King Anawtatha in 1057 to Kings Narathihapati in 1287 AD. Then became the Capital city of Mon. Many of the Pagodas and Monuments had built during the rules of Kings in Bago.

Today, there are many famous Pagodas in Bago such as Shwe Maw Daw Pagoda which is the golden landmark of Bago antics towering over the town with a height of 373 feet 9 inches, taller the Shwedagon Pagoda of Yangon, Shwe Tha Lyaung reclining Buddha image from 994AD is 180 feet long and 52 feet high at shoulder, Kalyani Sima (Ordination Hall) and Kyaik Pun Pagoda width four 30 meters high Buddha figures seated back to back.


SHWEMAWDAW PAGODA:

 

It is the golden landmark of Bago, which enshrined the sacred hairs and the tooth of lord Buddha. It has many similarities to the Shwedagon and is towering over the town with a height of 373 feet, 9 inches which is taller than Shwedagon.


KALYANI THEIN (ORDINATION HALL):

 

Kalyani Thein ( Kalyani Sima ) is near Shwethalyaung Pagoda. It was built in 1476 by King Dhamazedi, for the purpose of cultivation and development of true Buddhism. In the premises of the hall of ordination there lie ten large stone slabs containing detailed information of the history of Buddhism in Myanmar.


SHWE  THA  LYAUNG  RECLINING  PAGODA:

 

It is the most beautiful reclining Pagoda though it is not as large as Yangon's Chauk-htat-kyee Buddha image, it is much better known and loved because of the symmetrical and lifelike of all the reclining statues and because of its artistry and long history. It is 180 feet long and 52 feet high at the shoulder.


MOYINGYI  WETLANDS:

 

This nature reserve is recently opened for tourism and is a unique way to see rare birds. Each year millions of birds along the East Australasion fly to escape the winter weather. They stop to march. The flyway contains a network of wetlands where Moyingyi Wetlands is one of which is co-operating to contain migrated as well as domestic birds. This wetlands is 100 square kilometers in area.            top
